About this project

A project developed with Mastercard

Mastercard approached CrossTech to study one of the most important and least resolved problems in the remittance sector: what happens after the money arrives.

We worked together to look past the send. The focus: how the money gets used once it lands, and why so often it does not remain in the financial system.

The result is an honest look at where the sector stands today, and what would have to change for the money not only to arrive, but to stay.

A flow that sustains entire economies
US$860B
sent globally every year
US$155B
arrive in Latin America and the Caribbean
20%+
of GDP in some receiving countries
Remittances are not marginal.
They are structural.

Digitization transformed sending. It did not transform use.

The money travels through digital systems. But in many countries, the first thing the recipient does is withdraw it as cash. That gap is the central problem of this report.

In several markets, between 60% and 90% of recipients withdraw cash.

What you’ll find in the report

01
Why is it still cash?
The money arrives digitally. In many countries, it leaves the system immediately. Why that happens, and what it means.
02
The metric that matters
The volume sent does not tell the whole story. What matters is how much stays inside the financial system.
03
From a one-time event to a relationship
A transfer can be the first step of something more enduring. What it takes for that to happen.
04
No one solves this alone
Banks, fintechs, remittance companies, merchants, regulators. The role each one plays, and where the friction lives.
Voices from the report
Remittances are already digital when they are sent. In many cases they turn analog again when they are used.
For decades we have seen remittances as a transaction. The future is in seeing them as a financial relationship.
Banks, fintechs, remittance companies, and payment networks have to build, together, the space where that money can circulate.
